Modeling steering time when the user is not facing the window directly

Regarding user interfaces (UI) in spatial computing, how operability changes when the user is not directly in front of a window is a crucial issue in VR and 3D workspaces. While research on frontal operability exists, little has been done on angled positions. This paper focuses on circular path steering tasks in VR when the user is off-axis, investigating the relationship between difficulty and operation time. In the experiment, users performed steering tasks from four different angles. Analyzing the operation time and the angle relative to the user revealed that a difficulty index considering the apparent change in path width showed a high model fit to the measured operation time.

Motonaga is the lead author. Honma was responsible for deriving the rigorous difficulty index considering the non-linear change in apparent width shown below.
